Police Blotter: January 1 Incidents

Proctor County Sheriff’s Office – Selected Calls (1:00–3:00 a.m.)

01:14 a.m. – Route 3 / Industrial Corridor

Deputies responded to reports of a white cargo van “drifting sideways” near the Riverbend Ag Supply lot. Upon arrival, officers located the Village’s Counting Hour Enforcement van partially lodged in a drainage decline with its rear end severely compressed beneath the weight of approximately 22 cattle molasses lick tubs (estimated 4,800 lbs).

The subject at the scene was attempting to remove one of the tubs manually while repeating the phrase:

“I must give the cows their candy.”

During contact with deputies, the individual lost balance on a slick area of spilled molasses and vomited on the Sheriff’s boots, requiring additional cleanup assistance from Hobart Volunteer Fire.

No injuries were reported. The matter was referred to Hobart Municipal Court under statutes regarding unauthorized vehicle use, improper agricultural transport, and fluid containment violations. The Village issued a reminder later that morning stating that municipal vehicles are not approved for private livestock distribution.

01:52 a.m. – Mulberry Street, Uptown

Officers conducted a welfare check on a resident who reported “persistent tapping” on her back porch window. Deputies located a single raccoon attempting to remove a decorative holiday bow. The animal retreated without incident. No further action taken.

02:37 a.m. – Gallia Street, Near the Green

Deputies responded to a disturbance involving two individuals arguing over the ownership of a folding chair used during New Year’s Eve celebrations. Both parties agreed to leave the area after being advised that the chair “did not match descriptions of property belonging to either household.” No charges filed.
