Village Council to Convene for Inaugural 2026 Session on January 15

HOBART, OHIO – The Village of Hobart Council will convene for its inaugural session of 2026 on Thursday, January 15, marking the first regular council meeting of the new year and the formal opening of the Village’s annual legislative calendar.

The meeting will be held at Village Hall and is scheduled to begin promptly at 7:03 p.m. The evening will open with the Ceremonial Seating of Council, a long-standing Hobart tradition incorporating formal procession, candle lighting, and the presentation of council robes prior to the commencement of official business.

As in past years, the ceremony will also include the Presentation of the Civic Goddess, selected through the annual pageant process and charged with the symbolic observance of the Village Charter during the proceedings. The role is ceremonial and carries no governing authority.

Following the seating, Council is expected to proceed with routine organizational business, including confirmations, procedural acknowledgments, and other opening-year actions.

According to the Village Clerk’s Office, the agenda remains subject to revision. Items typically addressed at the inaugural meeting include departmental updates, confirmation of committee assignments for the year, and the reaffirmation of meeting rules and order.

Public comment will be permitted in accordance with standard Village policy. Residents wishing to address Council are reminded that comments must be directed to Council as a whole and are subject to established time limitations.

Village officials emphasized that normal meeting rules and enforcement procedures will be in effect throughout the evening.

The finalized agenda is expected to be released prior to the meeting.

Council looks forward to beginning the year’s work. The ceremonial seating is an important tradition and will proceed as scheduled.

Ceremonial seating while we STILL don’t have a mayor. Interesting priorities.

    1. Marvin Hendershot

Dale it’s the first meeting of the year. They do this literally every year.

    2. Marvin "Skip" Hendershot

Also the mayor thing isn’t going to get fixed by skipping the meeting.

The candles are not for show. People would do well to remember that this meeting sets the tone for the entire year.

Birdie not everything is a spiritual event.

  4. Lorraine Puckett

Will there be an explanation for why this meeting is happening now when an election should have already occurred.

    1. Anonymous

Because if they don’t meet the State gets involved. That’s why.

    2. Pete Waller

The Clerk’s office has followed guidance provided to the Village. Additional updates will be addressed during the meeting.

I WAS AT THE LAST INAUGURAL AND THEY SAID IT WAS “ROUTINE” THEN TOO

Gary, last year you said the same thing about the budget hearing.

Inaugural meetings are usually procedural, but they are also when precedent quietly gets set.

precedent is how they get away with things

Exactly. These meetings matter more than people think.

Order and ritual are stabilizing forces in uncertain times. I will be in attendance.

      Ritual doesn’t replace accountability, Reverend.

If they’re doing all that ceremony I hope they at least plan on starting on time.

    1. Connie Lou Riggs

They never start on time. They’ll say 7:03 and it’ll be 7:26.

  9. HOLLIS EVERSOLE

IF THE STATE IS WATCHING THEN THEY SHOULD BE TOLD WHERE THE MAYOR WENT

  10. Dana Crabtree

Every time there’s an “inaugural” meeting something changes and nobody explains it.

    1. Leon Smoot

People act like council doesn’t run most of this town anyway.

I just want to know if public comment is actually going to be allowed.
