Village Prepares for Annual Tree Lighting; Officials Urge Calm, Patience

HOBART, OHIO – Village officials confirmed Friday that preparations are underway for Hobart’s annual Christmas tree lighting, scheduled for Sunday evening in Civic Park near Possum Mound.

The tree, positioned just off the main walking path, was erected earlier this week and has since undergone what the Village described as a “routine inspection.” Temporary safety barriers and Please Stand Back signage have been installed in the area as a precaution.

Public Works crews were observed Friday afternoon unloading municipal storage boxes and adjusting extension cords near the base of the tree. A ladder remains staged nearby, though officials stressed it is “not intended for public use.”

“We ask residents to remain behind posted barriers during the lighting,” said Council Chair Martha Elkins . “This is a viewing event.”

The Village noted that the tree’s location near Possum Mound was chosen for visibility and accessibility, and that the walking path will remain open before and after the ceremony. Attendees are encouraged to dress warmly and arrive early, as parking in the park will be limited.

PAL-TV plans to provide live coverage of the lighting, with a short delay built in “as a precaution.” Officials declined to comment on the specifics of the delay, citing standard broadcast practices.

No additional programming has been announced, though Village staff confirmed that minor adjustments to the setup may continue through the weekend.

Residents are reminded that climbing the tree, handling electrical equipment, or “assisting” Village staff without authorization is prohibited under municipal ordinance.

I just hope they don’t block the path like they did two years ago. Some of us actually walk there every day.
