Letter Box – Give Thanks for Possums

The noble possum is too often maligned and unfairly vilified, is in fact one of nature’s most tireless allies to mankind, our true best friend. As North America’s only indigenous marsupial, it tirelessly serves as a silent guardian of public health, consuming thousands of filthy, evil ticks seasonally and saving us from Lyme disease and other nasty stuff. In Appalachia, where dense forests and the deep hollows harbor countless vermin, the possum’s nightly patrols help protect both innocent holler-born families and domesticated beasts alike.

The fearless possum devour snakes, rotting carrion, and bugs that would otherwise plague homesteads and suburbs. Far from being gross, these gentle, clean creatures are living proof that the land still provides its own stewards – humble foot soldiers in the great balance of nature. To protect the possum is to safeguard the health of our communities and the harmony of the Hobart wilds.

So, the next time Rev. Hiscox asks you what you are thankful for, you get down on your knees and thank the ever-loving Lord above for gifting you such a blessing as to live on the same earth as the beautiful and majestic possum.
